Our History
We started making Kingfisher Natural Toothpaste in 1988.
Richard Austin, Kingfisher’s founder and proprietor (and the guy who replies to your e-mails) started one of the UK’s first wholefood shops in 1976. From behind the counter he came to the conclusion that people would want to buy toothpaste that didn’t rely on artificial colourings, flavourings, sweeteners and preservatives to do its job (after all every time you brush your teeth some of the toothpaste you use is absorbed into your teeth and gums).
But getting it made wasn’t easy. Finally, when it was possible to manufacture a toothpaste that met Richard’s strict requirements, it was launched at the 1988 Homeopathic Conference (Richard’s partner, Annie, is a homeopath).
Happily, people liked it straight away and many have been using Kingfisher ever since.
With all Kingfisher’s ingredients listed on its packaging right from the start, the first flavour, Fennel, was such a success that we went on to introduce more flavours and varieties.
These days, Richard still works in Rainbow Wholefoods shop every Saturday morning, and Kingfisher is still the UK’s leading natural toothpaste.

BDHF Approval
Kingfisher was the first natural toothpaste to receive the important approval of the British Dental Health Foundation.
The BDHF recommend Kingfisher as an effective way to help keep teeth and gums clean and healthy and help prevent tooth decay. They recognise it as a valuable aid to achieving good oral health.
We proudly display our BDHF approval on each and every Kingfisher tube and box you see today.
It proves that toothpaste can be natural and effective.

Ethical Consumer Best Buy
Kingfisher Natural Toothpaste has been awarded Best Buy status by Ethical Consumer Magazine
We were especially pleased to have our work recognised by this important organisation and we carry their seal of approval on all of our boxes and tubes.
-
Cruelty Free
Kingfisher Natural Toothpaste has never been tested on animals and we’ve been a cruelty-free product from the beginning. We have gone on record as stating that we would cease trading rather than comply with any compulsory testing regulations.
No animals whatsoever are harmed in the production of our toothpastes.
In fact, we’re delighted to say, Kingfisher has been named PETA’s Best Cruelty-free Toiletries and Beauty Product.
-
Our Beliefs
Richard, who founded Kingfisher Natural Toothpaste, felt it had to have the same values as Rainbow Wholefoods, which he started in 1976 (he still works on both projects). So Kingfisher is strictly vegetarian (in fact it is vegan). It uses no animal ingredients whatsoever and has never used animal testing.
Kingfisher attempts to minimise its impact on the environment and to contribute where it can to positive projects locally and abroad, especially in Tibet.

FAQs
Q: How effective is Kingfisher at brushing my teeth?
A: Very. It carries the important BDHF logo, which means Kingfisher has the approval of the British Health Foundation - the best recommendation there is.
Q: Where can I buy it?
A: All health food shops including Holland&Barrett. Many chemists, Waitrose, natural health clinics, and of course, on this very site. Please click here to have a look at how buying works. (It's very easy). The easiest way to find a retailer near you is to web search for a Health Store by your post code. If you get stuck please e-mail to us at sales@kingfishertoothpaste.com
Q: Is it expensive?
A: No, it costs around from around £2.85 for a 100ml tube.
Q: Does it contain any GM ingredients?
A: No, it’s GM-free.
Q: Is it available outside of the UK?
A: Oui. Ja det är. نعم هو. Ja det er. ναι είναι. Sì, è. Já það er. Taip ji yra. да је. Ydy mae. Yes, it is. From Oswestry to Australia and many places between.
Q: I’m having homeopathic treatment. Is Kingfisher suitable?
A: If your homeopath prefers you not to use mint toothpaste, our fennel toothpastes will be ideal.
Q: Will my children like it?
A: Yes!
Q: Will it get my teeth clean?
A: It will. Kingfisher comes with the important British Dental Health Foundation approval which states that our toothpaste is a valuable aid to oral health.
Q: Does the use of coconuts in Kingfisher toothpaste endanger the rainforest in Sumatra?
A: No. We have written assurances that the Sumatran palm oil that we use comes from sustainable managed estates. The growers are working closely with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) on a Palm Roundtable initiative and are founder members of this organising committee.
Q: Is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) safe to use?
A: All our toothpastes are now manufactured free of SLS. But....The fact is that there is no accredited research which supports the largely internet-fuelled rumours, (see Urban Legends under Toxins www.snopes.com) about SLS. We have done an enormous amount of work on this and have asked all correspondents if they can help us to give substance to their allegations but nothing has come up.
The COSMOS Organic Standard (created by an alliance of 6 of Europe's leading organic certifiers The Soil Association/UK, BDIH/Germany, Cosmebio/France, Ecocert/France and ICEA/Italy) includes SLS as an acceptable ingredient for Organic Certfication and there are other companies similar to ours such as Tom's, Ecover or Weleda in the wholefood world who have come to the same conclusions as us over the years. We hope that you will appreciate that the idea of SLS being hazardous to health is, to say the least, very contentious.
Q: How green is my Kingfisher?
A: We are really happy to be an Ethical Consumer Best Buy.
As a caring company doing our best for the environment it means a lot to us to get this particular recognition.News
SLS
From Autumn 2012 all of our toothpastes have been produced without SLS. We remain convinced that this ingredient is both effective and safe but noted that many of our customers wanted us to make this change. So we have. It will take up to a few months for the new formulation to work it's way through wholesalers and retailers to your bathroom. The new toothpaste tastes great.HOLLAND and BARRETT
